WHAT IS A
VIDEO GAME?

Defining the video game

This is the story of a doubt that, far from being resolved, has become the driving force behind the present initiative. Our museum is called OXO after the first video game created on a computer, in 1952. But is OXO a video game? For many it is, for many others it is not. There is interactivity, graphics, but they do not have movement and interact with the player... At this point we asked ourselves a question: What is a video game?

The answer is not simple, starting from the official definition in the RAE, we find that video game is an “electronic game that is displayed on a screen”. A definition which would exclude some examples from our own museum such as AR Sandbox (collaborative project)

There is also a sobering reality: blind gamers who enjoy video games without the need for a screen. Don't they play video games?

That's why we are looking, with your help, for an open, participative and plural (re)definition of the concept of video games. We have convened some meetings that we will share through this website and our Youtube channel with very important guests for the common goal.

“Some digital games: they have rules that relate to fictions (or fictions that relate to rules), both parts managed by an electrical/computational system, which demands a playful attitude from those who want to participate in its system, whose level of systemic uncertainty depends on the system-participant relationship, but which, in this relationship, the participant does not accept to suffer the playful consequences in a non-playful context”.”

    Founder of DIGRA

    Victor Navarro

«At DIGRA Spain we understand that our subject matter is complex and the definitions we use change which aspects of that complexity are addressed or ignored. That is why we want to participate in these conversations and see how we use «video game».

“Everything is changing and so is the video game. From the ONCE Foundation's Ga11y project, we are working to ensure that video games are for everyone and we believe that the current definition does not represent this, it does not represent us. That is why we will be part of this campaign, with the aim of contributing a new vision of what a video game really is”.”
